It’s not news that there has been an increase in the number of car thefts recently. Although many older cars can be easily stolen, it may come as a surprise that even newer cars are being taken too.
In many cases, thieves simply break into your home and take the keys, but there’s also a different type of method being increasingly used…and this type of attack is on the rise in Australia.
Relay-Attack of Keyless Entry
Cars with keyless entry are susceptible to ‘relay attacks’ where the thief is able to boost the signal from your key fob, while it sits inside your house! The car thinks the key is right there (like when you normally stand next to or are in the vehicle) and this gives the thief access to unlock and start the car!
Preventing such as attack
One method to help prevent such an attack is the use of a faraday pouch or box. You can get yours here for under $40. This box (the one linked comes with additional pouches) blocks any signals from entering or leaving the box – I have this box and tried it right next to my car – and it works!
Additionally, securing keys properly along with this type of protection removes two methods thieves can use to take your pride and joy.
